Speaking of postcards…
I continue to send a weekly postcard to 52 subscribers who signed up for my postcard project for 2023. If you have not received one yet, don’t worry, you will!
For my new subscribers, here is more information about the project.
I have always loved postcards. Receiving a piece of small art with a heartfelt message by snail mail is a treasure. During the pandemic, a beloved friend received a brain cancer diagnosis, and I could not be by her side. To help, I made her postcards to stay present during her illness. Those postcards became a stand-in for my hug as they surrounded her walls when I could not be there in person. They also became a lifeline for me as I created a practice of unrefined messaging directly from the heart. The scraps and unfinished ideas became a way to speak and reach simultaneously. I was grateful for every postcard I got to send during her beautiful and too-short life.
In honor of my friend and as a way to spread inexpensive art that connects, I'd like to continue this practice of sending weekly postcards. Each week in 2023, I will randomly pick one person from my mailing list and send a homemade postcard. These cards will be part of my daily drawing practice and celebrate the process rather than the product.
Stay tuned for the 2024 postcard project sign-up.
“It’s me alone in this cool body The day my house burned down, A flood would have helped. I carry my friends in the rain. They are all made of wood.” ~Delilah Silverman excerpt from "Martha"
The image of carrying my friends is potent. That’s what friends do; we hold each other. This poem honors the elemental makeup we bring to our relationships – water, wood, and fire. I loved that the narrator got to be the strong one here. We take turns. This piece will be part of the online "Poetry in Motion" show with @artburst.studios. Stay tuned for other pieces from my collection created for this show.
