Dear Art Friends,
Happy Saint Patrick’s Day! I’m wishing you a “greening” start to the weekend. In this installment of my monthly newsletter, I’m highlighting some new art and my daily project, “Listless.” But first, I'll always start with a postcard from my heart to yours. Here goes:
Instructions on Not Giving Up More than the fuchsia funnels breaking out of the crabapple tree, more than the neighbor’s almost obscene display of cherry limbs shoving their cotton candy-colored blossoms to the slate sky of Spring rains, it’s the greening of the trees that really gets to me. When all the shock of white and taffy, the world’s baubles and trinkets, leave the pavement strewn with the confetti of aftermath, the leaves come. Patient, plodding, a green skin growing over whatever winter did to us, a return to the strange idea of continuous living despite the mess of us, the hurt, the empty. Fine then, I’ll take it, the tree seems to say, a new slick leaf unfurling like a fist to an open palm, I’ll take it all. ~Ada Limón
A couple of new pieces:
“Listless”
I do love a good list. I get satisfaction from writing down my aspirations for anything— ideas, goals, groceries, what to get done in a day, things that help, things that don't — in my handwriting. I like a good chronicle. I had a darling buddy. We made a lot of life lists together. When we lost her to brain cancer, I felt listless. I turned the word over and over in my mind this last year.
I have been taking a class on text in art, and it was through this beautiful group of artists I found my way back into making a daily list. This has been an essential practice for my work, mind, and heart. The project is called "Listless." To hold myself accountable, I post the lists daily on my Instagram story (Julia's IG link), where each is there for 24 hours and then gone. I like this ongoing ethereal conversation with my buddy, myself, and you.
That’s a wrap on the Artburst show:
What an honor to participate in the Artburst show that wrapped at the end of February. Stay tuned for their next online show. In the meantime, here is a picture of art going out to new collectors. If you've chatted with me at shows, supported me on social media, purchased my work, cheered me on, or are reading my news here - thank you. These connections provide a significant boost every day.
