Dear Art Friends,
Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit! (Happy August 1st; did I catch you first thing in the morning?) Though I’ve been on newsletter hiatus for the last couple of months, I’ve been working away in the studio. In this installment, I’m excited to share new work and upcoming events, but first, I’ll start with a postcard from my heart to yours. Here goes:
Paper Quilts
Over the last few months, I have transitioned to working solely on paper. The result is a body of work named "paper quilts" — beloved scraps hand-stitched together.
It's hard to talk about abstract work. Despite my best efforts to take what is inside of me and translate it into words, words remain insufficient in describing my intentions behind these paper quilts and why they feel like an extension of me. My "words" are these scraps sewn together.
But I want to tell you about them! Here are some fragmented thoughts about the constitution of these quilts:
Right now, my many roles necessitate art that I can transport (small enough to work in my lap in the carpool lane, on an airplane, in the waiting room). My art gets made when the busyness settles (sometimes scant minutes and sometimes a stretch of hours). I can often be found stitching my work in moments in between. I sew small scraps together, much like these moments come together to make up a day.
The resulting patchworks show how I collate visuals, thoughts, memories, and ideas -- my grist for living a life.
Paper's pliable, fragile composition allows it to be sutured like skin being gently pulled back together to heal.
With their various stages of tension, the seams represent how we hold together when going through significant events individually and collectively. The quilt persists, but not without strain.
Yet, the wear from this strain adds beauty. We are tethered to one another. What emerges are memorials to the learning, grief, and gratitude we feel as a result.
I am excited to share these in my upcoming shows.
